College or not

For every five blue collar worker only one will be replaced. This is the main reason why not everyone should go for a college degree. First, discover what you really enjoy doing and then discover the best way to get to that point. The US Air Force gave me a battery of test before I joined. I found out there were several areas where I would be good at. So I picked electronics and a 53 week course at Keesler Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi. That was the longest course for enlisted men. I loved electronics and went on to earn my BS in electronic engineering. I enjoyed studying so much that I went on to earn degrees in psychology, business, accounting, MBA, and my Ph.D.. I considered going for a second Ph.D. but I finally decided against it.

When I got off active duty I moved back to San Diego and the state of California gave me a battery of tests to see what I would have an aptitude for and what I would enjoy. I showed electronics, teaching, business, and accounting. That was a large part of why I went on to earn the degrees that I received. I am telling you this because a degree is not everything. A degree may not bring you more money nor happiness.  If you love working with your hands, you may be happier working as a carpenter, electrician, plumber, or any of the other trades. Not only may you be happier but you may earn more money. The trades often pay more then those fields that require a degree. This is especially true now that people believe that they have to have a degree. The degreed fields are often saturated so it may be hard to find a job in your chosen field.

Take a preference test along with an aptitude test. It could save you years of study only to find out that you do not like the field. Even if you have to pay for the tests with no help from your state, they should cost you less then one semester in college.
